Gt July Day 14: Sleep Over
“Bye Mark!” The human’s head perked up from his book as the tiny waiter waved from one of the blaconeys in the cafe. It was fairly late and the place was starting to close. Though since Mark had become a regular, he was able to stay right up until the doors were locked. “See ya Alex!” He gave a small wave before returning his eyes to the book he was studying, idly drumming his fingers on the table as he did so. After a while, when the lights started to dim, the human felt a small pair of eyes boring into him. Lowering down the book with an amused smile he saw Trix standing on his table, smirking at him. “The cafe is almost closed, just gotta get the lights and lock up… Unless you wanna be stuck in here.” She said with a cheeky grin as Mark got up from the table and began packing his things. With all his books and laptop stored in his messenger bag, Mark exited the cafe though lingered by the entrance to fiddle with his phone for a bit before heading back to the dorms. Before he

Lancer curled up under the rays of the hot sun. His white scales absorbed the light and practically illuminated the otherwise dark cave he called home. A cross breeze pushed through narrow openings in the walls to keep him cool. And his full stomach had been satisfied by the ripest fruits in the area. The serpent stretched his human upper half allowing the sun to warm his tanned skin and black hair. He rolled on the plush carpet of grass that lined the ground. The day was quiet, calm, and fine. Today, he reasoned, would be a perfect day.

Eli sat slumped in his chair completely dejected, his skull pounding as his eyes throbbed whenever he tried to focus anywhere. He had his head buried in his arms on the desk, the only thing that seemed to even remotely quell the headache. From the other room, Mia heard an unmistakable groan of pain emanate from him. Dropping what she was doing, she headed from the living room over to Eli, navigating the human accommodations that were built into the dorm. After about ten minutes she finally arrived at his desk. Knowing what he was going through, she walked up to him and placed a hand on his arm. Eli didn’t so much as flinch, so Mia thought to leave him alone. Though as she started to walk away, a hand slowly came behind her and enclosed her entire body, giving Mia a gentle squeeze. “Thanks.”

Blessed With a Curse 22
The arrival of Saturday brought with it a new challenge, one that had been on Lettie and Derrik's minds all week. At the park after the funeral everyone had agreed to meet up at some point on the following weekend, and over the past few days they'd solidified plans for Saturday afternoon. Their idea had been to check in on one another, and while no one came out and said it, all of their thoughts were on the smallest two of the group. There was more to it than just seeing each other though. Hidden in the back of everyone's mind was the dangerously tantalizing idea that they might be able to hang out like they used to. That maybe they could go back to a time before everything was turned upside down, even if it was only for a little while. Lettie didn't get her hopes up, but there was still a spark surging through her. She couldn't hold onto dreams of the "old normal" coming back, she'd made her peace with that well enough. For her it was more about the company. There were so few

With Maya's surprise visit behind them, the rest of the week was fairly quiet. Derrik got a lot of calls, but no one else came over, which was just fine with him. All the more time they got to spend together, growing and learning while they worked on Lettie's room. This task, as complex as it was, only deepened their affection for one another. As they neared the end of the week the pair had settled into a pretty comfortable routine. The little things that tripped them up early on were mere bumps in the road. Their natural rhythms were in sync again, almost making it seem like the accident had never even happened. Almost. Friday was one of the few days that was absent of any kind of check-ins, so Derrik and Lettie did their best to make the most of it. After spending the entire day working together they'd recently split up to cover more ground. Lettie was still in her room, taking care of a few minor tasks while Derrik had moved over to the kitchen to cook dinner.

Lettie woke up first the next morning, much to her dismay. The second she opened her eyes she wanted to close them again, to lose herself in the wonderful coziness all around her. Derrik's massive hand held her gently to his chest, providing both warmth and a light but reassuring pressure. He had shifted a little in his sleep, but was still lying mostly on his back. A deep inhale sent her higher, pinning her against his palm at the apex before slowly lowering her back down. The rushing that accompanied the reflex was a little terrifying, but Lettie didn't let it get to her head. 'Just something to get used to,' she told herself. The phrase had become a mantra of sorts during her stay with Peter and Wes, used mainly when things teetered towards overwhelming. Slightly more roused, Lettie lifted her gaze to look at Derrik. She'd watched him a few times in his sleep before, but this was almost completely different. The features she knew so well were now incredibly massive, sending

Since it was already so late, the group didn't stay at the park for long. Even so Lettie relished the opportunity, welcoming the faint breeze and lingering light. When it was time for everyone to part ways many hugs were exchanged, tears shed, and the muttered promise of getting together again soon was shared. Derrik was still anxious about their driving arrangements, so Lettie tried to ease his fears by not making a fuss about it. She'd be lying if she said there wasn't a part of her that liked the closeness of it. After a week apart she was completely surrounded by him. Going back home was a surreal experience. For Derrik it was like returning to the scene of a horrific accident. He'd spent days here alone, planning a funeral for his wife and living out a grief that felt so real it took his breath away. Lettie was undergoing a different kind of shellshock. Here was somewhere she'd lived for years, the safest place she'd ever known. It was the same as it'd always been, while she'd

Derrik waited in front of the car as Peter and Wes got out. His heart was racing, but for the first time that week it was for a good reason. This was it, the end of everything he'd been suffering through. They were the ones who were going to save him. "I'm so glad you're here," he muttered, the familiar sting of tears wetting his eyes. Peter's sympathetic smile glowed and he rushed over to wrap Derrik in a powerful hug. "I know, man. Me too." Wes shuffled over and tried to keep his distance, but his brother pulled him into the embrace too. Together they angled themselves to keep Lettie out of harm's way. More footsteps were headed over, and the hug slowly disbanded. Derrik positioned himself between the two groups, since he was the sole connecting thread linking them. "You guys remember Lettie's parents," he said solemnly. He turned to the middle-aged couple and smiled weakly. "This is Peter and Wes, Keith's younger brothers." "Of course," Lettie's mom murmured. A

The warm sun and cold water had done wonders for Derrik's mental state, but they hadn't lessened the heavy weight pulling at his heart. He held Lettie, bundled up in a towel for warmth, close to his body while he and Peter walked back to the cabin. If nothing else this brief reprieve had solidified his resolve. His plan was necessary, and would work, but it would be one of the hardest things he'd ever done. Inside the cabin things were a little livelier than earlier. Bryce and Allyson were back, and had claimed the couch. They were messing around on their phones, laughing each time one of them showed the other their screen. Wes was still at the table and had his laptop out again. His eyes were mostly focused on what he was doing, but every so often they'd dart over to Keith who was sitting nearby. Of all of them he'd moved the least, opting to sit near the center of the table and stare blankly out the window. Derrik lowered the towel to the table and helped Lettie untangle herself.

Down the grassy expanse behind the cabin was a gently sloping hill that led to the sandy shore of a small lake. They'd picked this place because it was a popular weekend getaway, so the lake itself was well maintained and perfect for swimming. Having access to the water had been pivotal in making this their groups' mini vacation. Peter's footsteps were light as he strolled over the soft grass. Just being outside put him a little more at ease, and a quick glance down showed the same was true for his tiny passenger. Lettie had released some of the tension in her shoulders and wasn't sitting nearly as rigidly. There wasn't much he could do for either her or Keith, but Peter hoped that little things like this would count for something. Leaving the shade of the trees Peter stepped out onto the short dock. There was a simple row boat moored off to one side, but he wouldn't need it. The shoreline was dutifully cared for, and got deep enough to make for a satisfying swim. Instead of
